Censys Raises $75M Series C to Expand Internet Intelligence Platform
Censys, the internet intelligence company spun out of the University of Michigan, has closed a $75 million Series C funding round led by Accel with participation from existing investors GV (formerly Google Ventures), Greylock Partners, and Intel Capital. The round brings the company's total funding to over $160 million and values it at approximately $900 million.
Founded in 2017 by U-M computer science professors Zakir Durumeric and J. Alex Halderman, Censys has grown from an academic research project into one of the leading attack surface management platforms used by Fortune 500 companies and government agencies worldwide. The company's technology continuously scans and maps the entire public internet, helping organizations identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities.
"This funding will accelerate our mission to make the internet safer for everyone," said CEO Brad Brooks from the company's office on South Main Street. "We're planning to double our Ann Arbor engineering team over the next 18 months, adding roughly 60 new positions. This city's deep talent pool in security and systems research is a massive competitive advantage for us."
Censys plans to use the capital to expand its product suite with new AI-powered threat detection capabilities and to grow its international sales presence. The company has also committed to expanding its current 15,000-square-foot Ann Arbor office, with plans to lease additional space in the Foundry building on East Liberty Street. The announcement comes amid a broader surge in cybersecurity investment in the Ann Arbor corridor, which has become one of the Midwest's premier hubs for security technology.
