Ann Arbor Named #3 Small Metro for AI-Enhanced Jobs by CoworkingCafe

Ann Arbor has been ranked the third-best small metropolitan area in the United States for AI-enhanced jobs, according to a new report released by CoworkingCafe. The analysis, which examined labor market data, patent filings, and AI adoption rates across 150 metros, placed Ann Arbor behind only Boulder, Colorado and Cambridge, Massachusetts among cities with populations under 500,000.

The report found that approximately 34% of job postings in the Ann Arbor metro area now mention AI-related skills, up from 18% just two years ago. "What makes Ann Arbor exceptional is the density of both AI research talent and companies actively deploying AI in production," said CoworkingCafe analyst Maria Torres. "You have a world-class research university feeding directly into a vibrant commercial ecosystem."

Key sectors driving Ann Arbor's AI job growth include autonomous vehicles (led by Toyota Research Institute and May Mobility), cybersecurity (Censys, Duo Security/Cisco), and healthcare AI (U-M Health, LeanTaaS). The report also highlighted the region's growing cluster of AI-focused startups, including several recent graduates of the Ann Arbor SPARK accelerator program.

The ranking comes at a time when Ann Arbor's tech workforce is experiencing significant growth. According to data from Ann Arbor SPARK, the region added over 2,800 net new tech jobs in 2025, with median tech salaries reaching $127,000 — competitive with many larger coastal markets while offering a significantly lower cost of living. Local officials point to the ranking as validation of the city's long-term investment in research infrastructure and talent development.
