Ann Arbor SPARK Reports Record Year: 47 New Tech Companies in 2025

Ann Arbor SPARK, the region's leading economic development organization, released its 2025 annual report today revealing that 47 new technology companies were formed or relocated to the Ann Arbor region last year — a record that surpasses the previous high of 38 set in 2021. The report also shows a 22% increase in total venture capital investment flowing into local startups, reaching $412 million.

"2025 was a watershed year for the Ann Arbor tech ecosystem," said Ann Arbor SPARK CEO Paul Krutko. "We're seeing a virtuous cycle: strong university research drives spinouts, established companies attract talent, and that talent pool makes Ann Arbor increasingly attractive for new ventures. The flywheel is spinning faster than ever."

Key sectors driving the growth include AI and machine learning (14 new companies), cybersecurity (8), health tech (7), and mobility and autonomous systems (6). The report highlights several notable relocations, including two Bay Area AI startups that chose Ann Arbor over Austin and Denver, citing access to U-M talent and lower operating costs as primary factors.

SPARK also reported that the region's total tech employment surpassed 30,000 for the first time, with average tech salaries growing 8% year-over-year. The organization's SmartZone business incubator on East Washington Street is currently at full capacity, with a waitlist of 15 companies. Plans for a second incubator facility in the Research Park area are under discussion. "The challenge now isn't attracting companies — it's ensuring we have the infrastructure, housing, and support systems to sustain this growth," Krutko noted.
